My mother in law just gave me the gift of this oh-so-cool article on how to make mosaics from Better Homes and Gardens/ November 1962.
As you'll see in these images (and even further back than the early sixties of course) mosaics have always been about form meeting function. A beautiful, fanciful way to combine decorative elements with a long wearing surface- be they found objects or newly minted tiles.
My very first mosaic project was a table top not unlike item those in the photos above. After that I was hooked...and years later I find myself designing colorful glass mosaic tile blends for use in kitchens, baths, pools and yes- table tops.
It's really like working in a candy store! And a real lesson that doing what you love is the most fulfilling job possible.
Oh- and I couldn't resist throwing in the photo of a "lovely" meatloaf from the same magazine. It is actually an ad for canned mushrooms. While I have nothing personally against canned mushrooms, they do possess a texture akin to overcooked calamari...if you like that sort of thing. Nevertheless this photo sure brings back memories of childhood meals. Perhaps for you as well?
